[Business Briefs] Michigan State Offers Scholarship
Michigan State University’s Broad College of Business Executive MBA (EMBA), with the support of the Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA), created a scholarship for nonprofit professionals dedicated to honing their business acumen.
The scholarship will be open to students applying for the next EMBA program cohort, which begins in the summer of 2017. The scholarship will cover half of tuition fees for two individuals working full-time in the nonprofit sector.
The scholarship will be awarded to candidates based on their application credentials, commitment to making an impact on the nonprofit sector, and a proven desire to grow personally and professionally.
In addition to the tuition scholarship, Broad’s EMBA program will waive application fees for applicants working for MNA member organizations. The scholarship is available to candidates attending any of Broad’s EMBA campuses, ensuring nonprofit employees across the state have the opportunity to apply.
The Broad Executive MBA Nonprofit Scholarship Application and all materials are due to the Executive MBA office by Feb. 1, 2017. The winning scholarship recipients will be notified in mid-March.

STUDY: NONPROFITS’ EFFECTIVENESS, TRANSPARENCY IMPACTING DONORS
Tides of change within the nonprofit sector are influencing individual donors’ personal perceptions and giving behaviors. Greater than two-in-five (41 percent) of donors report that increased knowledge and transparency into nonprofit effectiveness has affected their approach to giving. More than a quarter (27 percent) state that technological advances such as mobile giving and micro-giving have had similar impacts.
A new study released by Fidelity Charitable was built on survey responses from 3,254 individuals answering questions relating to their relationship with giving. Evolving technology, organizational practices and social norms have all made an imprint on individual philanthropy, the report’s findings state.
Changing attitudes toward generational wealth such as giving away greater portions of wealth, as opposed to passing it on, has impacted 21 percent of donors, while expanded access to financial strategies such as donor-advised funds (18 percent) and rise of alternative forms of giving such as investing in socially conscious businesses (16 percent) have also left a mark.
Millennials tend to be more global in their approach than Baby Boomers, with 47 percent splitting concerns between foreign and domestic needs, while only 31 percent of Baby Boomers feel similarly. Baby Boomers are also less influenced by trends than Millennials, 57 percent to 73 percent, and are especially less likely to be influenced by three or more trends, 23 percent to 43 percent.
Both generational groups tend to be at least somewhat optimistic that philanthropy can solve major issues, 96 percent of Millennials versus 93 percent of Baby Boomers. But Millennials are almost twice as likely to be “very optimistic,” 29 percent to 15 percent.
SOFTERWARE BUYS READYSETAUCTION
SofterWare, Inc., the Horsham, Pa., parent company of DonorPerfect fundraising software, purchased ReadySetAuction (RSA) in Bainbridge Island, Wash., which the companies say has managed at least $300 million in auctions for more than 3,000 nonprofits since its founding in 2003.
ReadySetAuction is cloud-based auction software that powers silent, live, mobile, and online auctions. Terms of the deal were not disclosed but industry insiders said the price tag was “in the seven figures.”
“We’re also excited about the potential to offer existing ReadySetAuction clients the opportunity to use DonorPerfect to expand their fundraising efforts beyond fundraising auctions,” said Jon Biedermann, vice president of fundraising products for SofterWare.
“There are a lot of software products in this fundraising auction space. All stand alone. None of the major direct competitors has its own integrated solution,” said Doug Schoenberg, CEO and co-founder of Softerware. “We think this gives us a competitive advantage.”
Biedermann said the firms had a working relationship and that ReadySetAuction’s data already interface with DonorPerfect. ReadySetAuction uses DonorPerfect’s Import Module to bring in data files pre-labeled to match fields so data are mapped, eliminating data entry.
